JOB TITLE:  STAFF ACCOUNTANT                                                                               DEPARTMENT:  FINANCE

SALARY RANGE: 45,000 – 60,000                                                                           FLSA: EXEMPT

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Assistant College Director for Finance

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  Full Time - 12 month position - PEERS position

 

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant monitors and maintains financial accounting records for all college system funds in accordance with federal, state, generally accepted accounting principles and GASB requirements.  The Staff Accountant provides general accounting support for daily operations of the system.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide support for accounts payable and student refund processes.
  • Responsible for assisting with monthly employee benefit reconciliations and billings.
  • Prepare and post General Ledger journal entries into the Accounting system.
  • Responsible for assisting with preparation of annual unclaimed property to the State Treasurer.
  • Account for rental property activity and maintain reconciliation to general ledger.
  • Complete requests and answer inquiries related to the general ledger.
  • Demonstrate initiative in understanding process flows and controls.
  • Collaborate with other Finance team in development and implementation of expedited workflow processes.
  • Support in preparation of year-end audit work papers.
  • Assist in managing fixed assets inventory.
  • Perform special research projects related to financial analysis and prepare various financial analyses for management.
  • Maintain financial records and supporting documentation for internal/external review and in accordance with record retention policies.
  • Utilize problem solving skills to resolve complex issues.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with system policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending system functions, including serving on committees and attending community events. 
  • Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience (full-time, part-time and/or internship).
  • Sound knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong self-management skills.
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

 

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum of two years accounting/auditing experience.
  • Fund accounting experience.
  • Payroll experience.
  • Experience with Colleague.
  • Experience working within a collegiate setting.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions.  Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel. 

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
