Job Title:  Part-time Culinary Arts Kitchen Assistant                                         

Department:  Technical Education

Salary Range: $13.40 - $15.00 per hour                                                                 

FLSA:  Non-Exempt                                                                                                                                                 

Immediate Supervisor:  Assigned Department Chair

Schedule Details:  Part-time not to exceed 19.5 hours per week; summer hours are available based on need. Hours will generally fall Monday – Friday between 7am-5pm.  Final schedule is based on need of the department; yet can be tailored to individual circumstance.  

 

Position Summary

The Part-time Culinary Arts Kitchen Assistant will assist the Department Chair in the daily operation of the kitchen lab spaces. The Culinary Arts Kitchen Assistant reports directly to the Department Chair and Chef Instructors of the department.  The Culinary Arts Kitchen Assistant does not supervise any other employees. The essential functions of this position require a physical presence onsite.  

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide support to the department chair in the overall maintenance and operation of the culinary lab spaces.
  • Assist instructors in preparing for classroom instruction by confirming product availability, set-up of lab for class instruction and assist instructors with lab shut-down and storage of leftover product as needed.
  • Take weekly inventory of product on-hand.
  • Receive and store products delivered.
  • Responsible for the proper rotation of all product to minimize loss of perishable items.
  • Use proper safety and sanitation in handling food products in the receiving, storing, and production of food items.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness and maintain laundry service for the department.
  • Monitor kitchen equipment for needed repairs and service.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance and scheduled cleaning within kitchen area is completed.
  • Abide by policies and procedures set forth by the college.
  • Maintain accountability and submission of time sheets.
  • Assist with any other responsibilities, special projects and duties assigned by the department chair.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • One year of kitchen experience.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 - 100 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

 

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Associate degree in culinary arts from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Two years of kitchen experience in receiving and storage, operations supervision, and food production.
  • ServSafe Certification.
  • Experience with Colleague.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions.  Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel. 

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
