JOB TITLE: ADULT EDUCATION AND LITERACY TUTOR      

DEPARTMENT:  ADULT EDUCATION AND LITERACY

SALARY RANGE: $15.00 PER HOUR                                                           

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  College Director – Adult Education and Literacy  

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  Part-time (not to exceed 19.5 hours per week)

LOCATION: Varies

 

Position Summary

Assists the AEL/ESL instructors in teaching basic reading, writing, English and /or math skills necessary to reach the students’ academic goals.  Under the direction of the AEL instructor, may be asked to assist either non-native speakers or native nonreaders to learn to read.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Relates to all types of people especially those who have difficulty learning. 
  • Encourages and helps to build student esteem. 
  • Facilitates student learning; guides the student rather than providing an answer. 
  • Provides clerical support for the volunteer program by answering the telephone, photocopying, word processing, preparing mailings and other duties as assigned. 
  • Dresses in a manner appropriate to the position. 
  • Interacts appropriately with students, AEL staff, AEL volunteers and the community.   

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to multi-task as well as change tasks based on the needs of the students who are present and the needs of the program.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Accept people from differing backgrounds and economic situations.
  • Have patience.
  • Know basic computer skills.
