Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager is designated as the lead coordinator of labs for the Bioclinical Sciences department and the Ozarks Tech system. This position will develop procedures and practices to administer and implement the day-to-day operation of laboratory course offerings, and direct or personally perform technical work in a college laboratory setting, (including ordering, receiving, stocking, maintaining, and issuing laboratory supplies and equipment). This Manager is also responsible for laboratory management and preparation for the Bioclinical Sciences classes across all campuses. This position requires travel to various campuses and centers throughout the semester.
Essential Job Duties
- Coordinate with faculty as needed to maximize effective utilization of resources.
- Coordinate the timely preparation, set-up, disbursement, and cleanup of supplies, materials, chemicals, and equipment for use in laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises and exams.
- Responsible for the management of part-time and work-study employees assigned to the BCS department as well as the staffing (hiring/terminating) of such employees.
- Update material lists on a regular basis; implement new/modified laboratory policies and procedures.
- Order materials, supplies and equipment; research products, assist in preparing and analysis of bids; purchase required items through departmental procedures; receive shipments and verify contents; maintain, control and store a sufficient inventory of supplies and equipment including live and time sensitive materials.
- Perform routine maintenance on and calibrate a variety of scientific and electrical/electronic instruments; monitor and coordinate repair of equipment by outside vendors as needed.
- Mix, bottle, and label chemicals, stains, and reagents; maintain and store chemicals according to basic chemical and industrial hygiene principles; maintain Material Safety Data Sheet documentation and inventory lists; train subordinates in proper chemical mixing procedures and management of chemicals. Oversee hazardous waste handling.
- Assist the department chair in day-to-day needs of the department.
- Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
- Comply with college policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including attending college functions, serving on committees and attending community events.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A Science related Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Master’s degree (or working towards the obtainment of a master’s degree) in a science related subject from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
- One year of experience in preparing microbiology labs.
- Flexibility and ability to respond to multiple demands.
- Experience with Canvas.
- Experience working within a collegiate setting.
- Collegiate Teaching experience in Health Science related subjects (Nutrition, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology).

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. Requires some travel during the school year to various campuses and centers. Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
